Dream Life

Opening your eyes and realizing that there is no innocence left, isn’t there something so innocent about that? There is a day in your early 20s, you know the one, where the world feels a bit duller. The color saturation faded but you don’t know what buttons you clicked to prompt it. The volume got turned up and the earbuds are stuck in your ears. What happened? They asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up and didn’t wait for the answer.

What did you dress up as for career day when you were a kid? What was the untouched hope for the use of your gift? I adorned my mom’s vintage fuschia lace prom dress with whatever play jewelry I could manage to scrape out of the bottom of my dress-up chest and snapped an attitude at anyone who asked me what I wanted to be. It couldn’t be more obvious that I want to be a princess, duh. We were forced to consider how we wanted to spend our days before we were sure what the concept of a day is. I often ponder the desire to go back to that time. Do I miss the vulnerability of wonderment or the social acceptance of dreaming? Would I go back if I had the chance? I know I wouldn’t want to go back with the knowledge that I had now, if it’s even possible to unsee adulthood. Seeing plastic heels and glitter hairspray behind my eyelids with every blink of my adult life wondering if thinking will ever feel as free as it once did.

Where is the fun in getting dressed nowadays? Runway after runway, yet all we step on is the sidewalk. Every breakfast tastes the same and meetings throw around the same words. First grade grammar class seemed more stimulating. It felt new back then, exciting and fresh. Nothing was the same. The world was ours to experience for the first time and the realities of the world was still a deep, dark secret every adult agrees to keep without a pinky swear to seal it. Is reality a thing or a container for compliance? Walking with your feet on the ground and your head just a few feet above that is encouraged. From there you can’t see the rest of the world. When your head is in the clouds, that’s when you can see everything. When you know that there is enough space for everyone to exist in their full expression. Who organized this organized belief? Who drew the lines you have to color within? Who replaced the crayons with a ballpoint pen?

Moving through the world becomes grey when no one is one the lookout to balance the saturation. No one told us we have to keep our eyes on the colors. Keep your eyes on the color, but don’t do anything to hold onto it. Childish becomes an insult and somewhere along the line we were taught to believe it cuts deep when used. Two worlds begin to overlap in every single second. The freedom of before and the entrenchment of after. No graduation cap, no job offer, no apartment keys. Just a blink that collapses one way of thinking so powerfully it can build an entire other universe. But, don’t mourn the first as that takes away from your productivity. Stuck in efficiency and shocked I used to believe that what I know now as entrenchment was enchanted. I yearned for the day that I could sit at my grey desk in my grey pantsuit talking to my grey boss about grey numbers that enhanced someone else’s ability to see the world in brighter color. I fell for it and saw a fuchsia lace dress waiting at the bottom. Thrown without care, the girl is lost and afraid, she needs someone to pull her out. Her dress is ripped and stained, and I’m judging myself for thinking it looks better that way. I’m only in my 20s, I’m not qualified to be a teen mom. I want to help her, but how does someone lost, find another?

We exist in a world exchanged by hate and abundant with love. Combat the extremities with an act of defiance so pure it ripples into tsunamis against the rigidity of normativity: childishness. Drawing outside of the lines only enforces the need to stay in the lines, so scribble everywhere. Mismatching your clothing shows who you are in a world that rewards complacency and conformity, so invent new patterns to clash. Dance in the rain, laugh too loud, wear the princess dress and costume jewelry just because you want to. Hold on to the parts of you that see the world in saturated color. They are the parts that guarantee success. The kind of success that makes your heart flutter outside the lines.

My personal favorite hot girl combination would be the European world tour in head to toe vintage girl summer. Let’s daydream together about it.

White wine and croissants in the gardens outside of the Louvre on a warm Parisienne morning, limoncello and pasta on the breezy Naviglio Grande in Milan for dinner, and end the night with tapas and sangria in lively Barcelona. Stay in my fantasyland with me for a bit where we can definitely travel around the continent that quickly. Here we can also travel like this with an unlimited credit card, and yes, someone else will get that tab, no stress here! There are no distractions and no reason to focus on anything besides finding new corners of your soul that you have yet to explore.

In each city, you may find someone more daring than the last, or more romantic than the last. While it is doubtful, you might even find a version of yourself more angry, sad, or hurt than the last. How do you walk down the street, communicate with others that might not share a language with you, or try new foods you might not be willing to try at home? How do you dress for the version of you that is found in that city?

Because we left off our fantasy in Barcelona, let’s stay there for a minute! A vibrant city nestled into the gentle waves of the ocean and majestic mountains, depending on which way you are facing. Lively, calm, colorful, yet natural. Barcelona sits in the center of many juxtapositions, creating a unique opportunity to exist within a carefree structure.

While traveling, you find yourself in scenarios that are new to you, asking you to expand and grow into the space. I like to think of traveling like repotting a plant. You take the time to find a new pot, make sure there is enough room for the roots to spread out a bit more, plan time to switch it over with lots of care to keep the plant comfortable, and then allow the plant a few days to adjust and expand into its new home. Of course, every vacation isn’t a permanent move (unless you are like me and crawl Zillow from every hotel you ever stay in). But, you have new freedom and space to spread your roots and breathe into new ideas, hobbies, and lifestyles. Every travel experience you have opens your mind a bit more to how your daily life could feel if you prioritize and weave in little ways to enjoy yourself more than you already might.

So, what is the best way to bring these newly explored versions of yourself home and welcomed into your daily routines? International vintage shopping!

Keeping the clothes currently on this planet in circulation, it is more affordable, and curating a new-to-you outfit out of clothing another culture has shaped…can you find the downside?

Shopping in the Two Market chain of vintage stores nestled in the Poble Nou neighborhood of Barcelona, it is so amusing to wonder what the lives of the people who wore the clothes before they found their way back to the stores might have felt like. What they might have had for breakfast that morning? Did they tell someone they love them for the first time on the beach in this dress? Or maybe, reunited with their long-distance best friend to go hiking in that shirt? How many languages does the last person who wore those pants speak? What would be their favorite memory with those pairs of shoes? Did they have any soul exploration epiphanies, or would mine be the first in those overalls?

Finding pieces that excite the parts of us we are getting to know in the travel destination invites new possibilities into our day-to-day lives. Maybe in Barcelona, you tried patatas bravas for the first time and the orange blouse in the store reminds you of the sauce. So, the next time you go to your favorite local bar on a Friday night, you order something on the menu you’ve never had before. Just to keep the exciting traveling spirit alive in the comfort of your new orange shirt.

Traveling is a portal to possibility within ourselves. Learning how to love, enjoy, and smile more in our comfort zones by veering out into the unknown every once in a while.

And with every plane, train, or car…we find ourselves (along with our vintage finds), born again.

Born Again

Wanting More, Feeling Less

There is no singular idea more expansive than that of the Earth. She is our fortress and our solitude, blanketed in dirt and accessorized with trees. Oceans wrap the parts of us we don’t dare to go and the clouds hold everything we want to see.

What is freedom? Truly, what is it and how do we get it? Do other animals give up their ability to live for the betterment of others? Is the drunken cocktail of freewill and manipulation exclusively reserved for those of our kind? Or do we shake while the lions, fish, and ants stir?

Wanting more whispers in our ears, sitting on our shoulder, holding the reins one strand of hair at a time. Painful, constant, eventually dull. He is sexy, always running but never seems to sweat. Holds out his hand to me, with the world behind him. It is his to offer me. But, I know he never will.

Is it my fault?

She is opulent. Young by force and old by choice. Taking up physical space and using none of it. The inhale tickles my throat and holds me by the lungs. Letting me know that my time is ticking, reminding me that I am alive as long as I choose to be. Is life valuable if it really belongs to her? If you hold your nose are you able to tell the difference between bread and cake?

The darkness is so dark. Can a diamond create the light at the end of the tunnel to match the radiance of the sun? I want her so badly, how can I become him… to have her? The light shines down on me, but when I look at it I find myself lost in wondering where it comes from.
